Castilla y Leon V.T.

Castilla y León V.T. is a Spanish geographical indication for Vino de la Tierra wines located in the autonomous region of Castile and León. Vino de la Tierra is one step below the mainstream Denominación de Origen indication on the Spanish wine quality ladder.
For a winery like Bodegas Tridente, who bottles their wines under the “Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León” classification, the strict DO rules with respect to location has created a real issue as their vineyards are located between Villanueva de Campean (Zamora) and El Pego (Toro), some vineyards are therefore located in two different Spanish DO appellations, being “Tierra del Vino de Zamora DO” and “Toro DO”. The owners and the winemaker of Bodegas Tridente took the bold decision to bottle their wines under the broader “Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León” appellation simply to avoid the complex and bureaucratic process of administrating the separation of grapes from the same vineyards, make a separate vinification process and applying the different labelling to the bottled wines. This decision has however not affected the actual quality of the wines produced, and therefore the DO vs VT is not always and indication of a different level of quality.
The area covered by this geographical indication comprises all the municipalities in Castile and León and it acquired its Vino de la Tierra status in 2005.
