Prieto Picudo, 0.75L, 2021

Description;

Prieto Picudo is a fascinating wine to try, it is an indigenous grape of Castilla y Leon. Regardless of its lack of “official” prestige, well-made wines from Prieto Picudo offer sun-kissed black cherry notes, chocolate, dusty earth, and a spicy black pepper note that’s supported with the wines zippy acidity. Prieto Picudo wines are rather hard to find, and usually a fantastic value when you do.

The wine is produced from 100% Prieto Picudo grapes and it is located in Villanueva de Campeán, close to Zamora, under the denomination of Vino de la Tierra from Castilla y León. Prieto Picudo is autochthonous to the province of León, the creeping bush vines at Bodegas Tridente are very old.
The harvest is done by hand, with a second grape selection in the cellar. The grapes are destemmed and gently decanted into stainless steel tanks where the maceration takes place at 10 degrees. Finally, the wine is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels. The wine has good aging potential due to its strong tannic structure and acidity, which allow them to develop complex flavours over time.

Tasting Notes;

A cherry colour with a garnet rim, the wine displays an aroma of ripe fruit on the nose, with dark-roasted notes and nuances of fine oak wood. It comes over as mature, flavoursome, powerful and elegant on the palate, revealing spicy, fruit and toasty notes. Good tannins and acidity and concluding with a long, persistent finish.

Wine Pairings;

Pairs well with game dishes like venison with blackberries, guinea fowl with a spicy rub, and grilled steaks with a mushroom or peppercorn sauce. Wild mushrooms, garlic vegetables, barbecued beef with polenta and vegetarian alternatives like smoked seitan will work a treat.
