Juan Gil Silver Label, 3.0L (DMAG), 2021

Description:

Wine Spectator: ”Bodegas Juan Gil has become a Spanish wine powerhouse under the guidance of the family’s fourth generation.”

Bodegas Juan Gil, the Spanish estate behind cult collectibles “Clio” and “El Nido”, also produce a range of terrific wines offering the house’s signature richness and complexity at everyday drinking prices. Composed of 100% Monastrell (a.k.a. Mourvedre) from very old, dry-farmed vines, planted to the region’s famously chalk and limestone soils, poor in nutrients, the yield is very low of about 2.500 kg/Ha. Maceration-fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes:

This drinks like a much more expensive wine, with explosive aromas of currant, cassis and boysenberry accented by smoky spice. Almost opaque purple in colour, the 12 months of aging in French oak has lent to extra depth and complexity to the grape’s characteristic ripe, dark fruit. The palate is smooth as silk, rich, powerful and voluminous on the attack, silken and juicy in the mid-palate with excellent length and persistence, and a long spicy well-balanced finish lingering of vanilla and toast.

Wine Pairings:

So delicious on its own, this makes a natural partner to grilled and roast meats and is a go-to for charcuterie and cheese. Its richness and complexity also make it fun to pair with Korean, Chinese and Indian fare.
